Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung (2026): the 646 hp V8 coupe limited to 30 units
Unveiled on 10 September 2026, the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung lines up a 646 hp twin-turbo V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft, pure rear-wheel drive and 170 kg less weight. Thirty units, all sold. Analysis, and what it means for the future CLE 63.

Thirty units, every one of them sold before the official reveal: the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung never needed a brochure. Unveiled on 10 September 2026, this 646 hp V8 CLE above all marks the explicit return of the eight-cylinder engine to the heart of Affalterbach's strategy.
At Turismo, we follow these extreme objects for one simple reason: they dictate what will arrive, two or three years later, in the cars you can actually drive every day. Here is what the CLE 646 tells us about the future of AMG.
The context: the Mythos series, or the art of organised rarity
Mercedes-AMG launched the Mythos series in December 2024 with the PureSpeed, a windscreen-free speedster built in 250 units. The principle is openly stated: collector's items sold by invitation, reserved for customers who already own several models from the brand. The CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is the second chapter, and it pushes the cursor much further.
Thirty units is rarer than the PureSpeed, and even rarer than the SLR McLaren Stirling Moss (75 units). The entire production run was allocated before the public presentation. This car has therefore never been a commercial product in the usual sense, but an engineering demonstration doubling as a heritage investment.
The industrial stakes go well beyond those thirty customers. Since the lukewarm reception given to the four-cylinder plug-in hybrid AMGs, the brand has been looking to reassert its acoustic and mechanical identity. The CLE 646 is the most direct possible answer to that expectation.
What makes this V8 different from a simply turned-up engine?

Under the bonnet sits the AMG M177 EVO, a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. But the central modification is not a more generous map: it is the adoption of a flat-plane crankshaft. This architecture reduces rotating masses, improves the way the engine revs out and makes throttle response noticeably sharper, according to Mercedes-AMG. It also radically changes the engine's acoustic signature.
Quoted output is 646 hp (475 kW), with 850 Nm available from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm. One point deserves clarification, because approximations are circulating: 646 ch DIN (PS, the European standard) equates to 637 hp under the American SAE standard, or exactly 475 kW. Both figures describe the same engine, the model designation using the PS value.
Added to this is a 48 V mild-hybrid system with an integrated starter-generator (ISG), providing 23 hp and 205 Nm of temporary assistance. Neither plug-in hybrid nor capable of electric running: the CLE 646 is a pure combustion car, with no traction battery and no charging socket.
- Flat-plane crankshaft: crisper rev build-up, instant throttle response
- Three separate cooling circuits (one high-temperature circuit for the engine, two low-temperature circuits for charge air, gearbox oil and the 48 V components)
- High-performance exhaust largely in titanium, cold section co-developed with Akrapovič
- AMG Speedshift TCT 9G transmission with rev-matching on downshifts
The triple cooling circuit is not cosmetic: the stated objective is intensive track use at very high temperatures, without performance degradation lap after lap.
Why did AMG remove all-wheel drive?
The CLE 53, the basis for the project, uses 4Matic+ all-wheel drive. On the 646, the system has been removed entirely. The choice is as ideological as it is technical: AMG wanted pure rear-wheel drive, with the behaviour and engagement that come with it.
An electronically controlled rear limited-slip differential takes over, calibrated to allow controlled drifts. Launch Control has been completely recalibrated for rear-wheel drive, which is far from anecdotal when 850 Nm must be put down through the rear axle alone.
This deletion also contributes to weight saving: roughly 170 kg less than the production model. Carbon fibre does the rest, with wings, front end, side skirts, bonnet, roof and rear bumper in that material. The bodyshell itself has been extensively modified to gain rigidity.
As for the chassis, the CLE 646 receives coilovers developed with KW Automotive, featuring four-way adjustable damping technology, along with AMG Ceramic High-Performance Composite brakes. The tracks are widened by around 6 cm compared with the CLE 53, hence the widebody bodywork.
Is the active aerodynamics really worth its 250 kg of downforce?

Mercedes-AMG quotes more than 250 kg of aerodynamic downforce at maximum speed. The figure rests on two distinct devices, one of which is manually adjustable, something rare on a road-legal car.
At the front, in Race mode, a deployed diffuser forms an inverted wing profile beneath the car. The accelerated airflow creates a Venturi effect that increases downforce on the front axle. The gain is immediately noticeable in steering precision, which is consistent with the physics involved: more load on the front, more bite on turn-in.
At the rear, the central section of the carbon wing is adjusted by hand, allowing the aerodynamic balance to be tuned to the circuit. Vents cut into the widened wings ventilate the wheel arches and also contribute to downforce by releasing the pressure build-up generated by the tyres.
- Deployable front diffuser in Race mode, Venturi effect on the front axle
- Carbon rear wing with a manually adjustable central element
- Extraction vents in the widened wings, ventilation and downforce
- Stated result: more than 250 kg of downforce at maximum speed
What performance, and at what energy cost?
The official figures are understated but telling: 0 to 100 km/h in under 4 seconds, 0 to 200 km/h in 11.4 seconds, top speed approaching 310 km/h. Absolute kerb weight has not been disclosed, Mercedes-AMG simply stating the 170 kg saving compared with the production model.
The energy bill is owned without apology: 15.8 l/100 km on the combined cycle and 359 g/km of CO2, meaning class G. In France, that level places the car right at the top of the malus scale, which has no bearing on an object sold to thirty collectors, but is a reminder of why this kind of engineering remains an exception rather than a direction of travel.
On price, let us be clear: Mercedes has communicated no figure, the thirty units having been allocated before the presentation, by invitation. Any number quoted elsewhere is an estimate. The logic of the Mythos series suggests a strong premium on the secondary market, but no public transaction allows that to be substantiated.
How does it stand against the other rare objects from Affalterbach?
Rather than comparing the CLE 646 with rivals whose figures are not guaranteed to the decimal point, the most honest comparison takes place within the Mythos universe and the CLE range. It is also the most revealing about the brand's strategy.
Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung (2026)
- Engine: 4.0 l M177 EVO twin-turbo V8, flat-plane crankshaft, 48 V mild hybrid
- Output: 646 hp (475 kW), 850 Nm from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm
- Drivetrain: rear-wheel drive, AMG Speedshift TCT 9G transmission
- Performance: 0 to 100 km/h in under 4 s, 0 to 200 km/h in 11.4 s, around 310 km/h
- Consumption and CO2: 15.8 l/100 km, 359 g/km (class G)
- Production: 30 units, all sold
Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed (2024), the first Mythos chapter
- Format: windscreen-free speedster, motorsport-inspired
- Production: 250 units
- Positioning: a style and collector's object above all
- Relative rarity: eight times more widely produced than the CLE 646
Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4Matic+, the production basis
- Drivetrain: 4Matic+ all-wheel drive, removed on the 646
- Tracks: around 6 cm narrower than those of the 646
- Weight: around 170 kg more than the 646
- Availability: production model, listed in the catalogue
The reading is clear. The PureSpeed was an aesthetic statement, the CLE 646 is an engineering statement. And the CLE 53 serves as a useful reminder: the gap between a production AMG and its Spezialanfertigung version is not only about power, but about the drivetrain, the track width, the bodyshell and the aerodynamics.
What should we take from it for future production AMGs?

This is probably the most important point for the reader who is not one of the thirty. The CLE 646 is the clearest signal yet of the V8's return at AMG, a persistent rumour for several months now, with the CLE 63 systematically named as the first beneficiary.
A large share of the engineering developed here should reappear on the future CLE 63: thermal management, rear-wheel-drive calibration, bodyshell rigidity, aerodynamic elements. On the other hand, nobody expects 646 hp on the production model, nor the flat-plane crankshaft, nor the four-way adjustable KW coilovers.
- What should reach production: the twin-turbo V8, the reinforced thermal management, part of the chassis work
- What will stay exclusive: the flat-plane crankshaft, the Akrapovič titanium exhaust, the manually adjustable aero
- What remains uncertain: the final power level, the launch timetable, availability in France
To access an AMG without tying up capital or exposing yourself to depreciation, car subscription remains the most rational format: a single monthly payment, with insurance, maintenance and roadside assistance included, and the option to switch models as the range evolves. How many units of the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 will be produced?
Thirty in total. The entire production run was sold before the official reveal on 10 September 2026, by invitation sent to collectors who already own several Mercedes-AMG models.
Does the CLE 646 produce 646 hp or 637 hp?
Both figures describe the same output. 646 ch DIN (PS, the European standard) corresponds to 637 hp under the American SAE standard, or 475 kW. The model name uses the DIN horsepower value. Articles quoting 637 hp apply a conversion that is unsuited to the European market.
What is the price of the Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung?
No official price has been communicated. As the entire series was allocated to invited customers, no public price exists. The amounts quoted elsewhere are estimates, not manufacturer data.
Is the CLE 646 a plug-in hybrid?
No. It has a 48 V mild-hybrid system with an integrated starter-generator, providing 23 hp and 205 Nm of temporary assistance. There is no traction battery, no charging socket and no electric mode. Quoted combined consumption is 15.8 l/100 km, for 359 g/km of CO2.
Will this technology reach a more accessible AMG?
Partly. The twin-turbo V8 and a portion of the chassis and thermal work should equip the future CLE 63, whose launch has not yet been dated. The flat-plane crankshaft, the titanium exhaust and the manually adjustable aerodynamics will in all likelihood remain specific to the limited series.
In summary
The Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is not a souped-up CLE 53: it is a complete engineering exercise, with a 646 hp flat-plane-crank V8, the removal of all-wheel drive, 170 kg less weight, more than 250 kg of aerodynamic downforce and a carbon widebody. Thirty units, all sold, at a price that has never been disclosed.
Its real significance, for the majority of enthusiasts, lies elsewhere: it confirms that the V8 is coming back at AMG, and that part of this technology will trickle down to production models such as the future CLE 63. That is the car to watch.
