Mercedes-AMG GT SUV electric: 1,169 PS, 710 kW charging and the Cayenne in its sights
The first large SUV developed entirely by AMG, the electric GT SUV promises up to 860 kW (1,169 PS), a 128 kWh battery and 710 kW charging. Specs, versions, timeline and rivals.

An SUV over 5 metres long, weighing nearly 2.7 tonnes, that claims 0 to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds: the figures seem to belong to another category entirely. Yet that is the promise of the electric Mercedes-AMG GT SUV, with up to 860 kW, or 1,169 PS, and claimed charging at 710 kW.
The context: a "Born in Affalterbach" SUV
AMG has been tuning Mercedes SUVs for decades. The GT SUV, however, marks a clean break: according to the manufacturer, it is the first full-size SUV that AMG has developed entirely in-house, without starting from an existing Mercedes base.
It is also the second model built on AMG.EA, the brand's dedicated electric architecture. It follows the electric GT 4-door unveiled earlier in the year, sharing its motors and battery. So AMG is not creating a one-off here: the brand is rolling out a platform, and the SUV is its most imposing expression.
The dimensions confirm it. At over 5 metres long and approaching 2.7 tonnes, it plays in the same league as a large electric Cayenne. The styling, however, remains unmistakably AMG: illuminated grille, wheels up to 23 inches and a relatively low silhouette for an SUV.
Which versions of the electric Mercedes-AMG GT SUV are planned?

The range comprises three versions, from 400 to 860 kW, or 544 to 1,169 PS. The drivetrain layout changes with the power level:
- AMG GT 53 SUV (400 kW, 544 PS): two motors, one per axle, with a two-speed gearbox on the rear axle.
- AMG GT 55 SUV (600 kW): three axial-flux motors, two of which drive the rear wheels.
- AMG GT 63 SUV (860 kW, 1,169 PS): same three-motor layout, around 2,000 Nm, 0-100 km/h in 2.5 seconds and a top speed limited to around 270 km/h.
One detail may cause confusion: the American press quotes 1,153 hp, the European press 1,169 PS. Both refer to the same 860 kW output, expressed in imperial horsepower on one side and metric horsepower on the other. The same logic applies to the 0-60 mph time of 2.6 seconds quoted in the US.
What range and charging speed does AMG claim?

This is where the GT SUV hits hardest. The figures announced by Mercedes-AMG:
- GT 55 and GT 63: 128 kWh battery, up to 700 km WLTP range, DC charging up to 710 kW.
- 10 to 80% in around 12 minutes, and up to 454 km added in 10 minutes.
- GT 53: 106 kWh battery, up to 668 km range and charging up to 600 kW.
These figures remain provisional: Mercedes-AMG states that they are not yet homologated. No real-world measurements exist at this stage. With nearly 2.7 tonnes to move, a noticeable gap from the WLTP cycle should be expected on the motorway, as with any electric SUV of this size.
Another caveat: to make use of 710 kW, you need a charger capable of delivering it. In Europe, stations above 400 kW remain rare. For now, the maximum charging speed is as much about future-proofing as it is an everyday advantage.
What technology lies beneath the bodywork?

Three technical elements set the GT SUV apart from most electric SUVs on the market.
First, the axial-flux motors. This technology comes from the British specialist YASA, acquired by Mercedes-Benz in July 2021. On the GT 4-door, it made its debut in a series-production electric car. The SUV inherits it directly.
Next, the 800 V architecture and the battery. AMG is not just chasing spectacular lap times: the brand wants repeatable performance, without overheating after a few standing starts. Hence a high-performance battery with cylindrical cells directly cooled by oil, paired with 800 V electronics that also serve fast charging.
Finally, the cabin integrates onboard artificial intelligence, mentioned by the specialist press, though details of its functions have yet to be specified.
When can you order the GT SUV, and at what price?

The timeline is staggered. Orders for the GT 53 open on 20 October. The GT 55 and GT 63 will follow in spring 2027.
French pricing has not yet been announced. We will update this article as soon as the official price list is published. No long-term lease offer has been announced to date.

How does it compare with the Porsche Cayenne Electric and the upcoming BMW X5 M?

The target is clearly identified by the press: Electrek pits the GT SUV against the Porsche Cayenne Electric, and BMWBlog notes that it debuts ahead of the electric BMW X5 M. As the full specifications of both rivals are not yet confirmed in our sources, we publish only verified data here.
Mercedes-AMG GT 63 SUV: power 860 kW (1,169 PS); 0-100 km/h in 2.5 s; 128 kWh battery; WLTP range up to 700 km; DC charging up to 710 kW; 10-80% in around 12 min; availability: orders in spring 2027.
Porsche Cayenne Electric: power, battery, range and charging to be confirmed on the manufacturer's spec sheet; positioning: direct rival named by the press; availability: on the market ahead of the GT 63, which targets it in 2027.
Electric BMW X5 M: power, battery, range and charging not yet revealed; positioning: competing high-end sporty SUV; availability: unveiling after that of the AMG GT SUV.
The takeaway is therefore primarily about timing. Mercedes-AMG stakes its claim with very high charging figures, Porsche already has an established product, and BMW has yet to show its hand.
Our verdict: is the AMG GT SUV worth waiting for?
On paper, the GT SUV ticks every box of a supercar SUV: 1,169 PS, 2.5 seconds, 128 kWh and above all a 10-80% charge in around 12 minutes, its most distinctive argument. The axial-flux technology and oil-cooled cells address a genuine weakness of performance EVs: repeatable performance.
Three reservations apply, however. The figures are not homologated. Chargers above 400 kW remain rare in Europe. And the price is unknown. Our verdict: a very serious contender, to be judged on the evidence of the first drives, with the GT 63 version reserved for customers prepared to wait until 2027.
